Politicians are like the Wizard of Oz.
Either they don’t have a heart, they need to find some brains, or they simply have no courage. Most suffer from all 3 problems.
Businesspeople are different.
Having worked for 20+ years editing TV commercials, I’ve come in contact with many old-school business owners. I have observed that the Wizard of Oz could have helped these successful people in the heart department quite often. He could have supplied more brains.
But the Entrepreneurs who made it far enough to need my services as a TV commercial editor- were not lacking in 1 thing.
THOSE HEARTLESS IMBECILES ALL HAD COURAGE SPILLING OUT OF THEIR CRACKS!
I kid… I kid.
But seriously, I bet your business isn’t coming together because you lack courage!
Let me make something clear. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. You’re afraid for a good reason.
You don’t want to give up the sure thing that you have in your current corporate job. Despite being unfulfilled and frustrated, your brain is telling you that you’d be crazy to cut off your life line.
It’s perfectly normal for you to be hesitant to venture into the unknown.
Now- Let’s get some courage.
I want you to think really hard about the answers to these questions.
•What would happen if you got laid off?
•What would you do if you became disabled?
•Where can you cut expenses if you had to get by on a smaller income?
•If any of that happened, could you never go back and get a similar job somewhere else?
You see- being cut off from your job will not be fatal, and you will be able to make adjustments to cope. When you think about it more critically, you begin to see that not having your current job and income is survivable. If things don’t work out the way you can get back to where you are now. After all- you have already gotten there once.
Does this help with the courage? I hope so, because that’s all I got for you today.
Just remember. You have to be your own Oz. If you lack the brains, you can take a course and learn. If you lack the heart, I suggest you visit a soup kitchen, and try to look at the world through the eyes of other people that are truly in a worse situation than you.
If you need more help, and can’t break the golden handcuffs that keep you bound to your corporate job, then watch Die Hard with Bruce Willis.
Great flick. John McClane is the main character. He runs barefoot through glass, jumps off an exploding high rise, and confronts his ex-wife. This dude felt apprehension to do all those thing- just like you. But he mustered the courage, did what needed to be done, cracked some jokes, and defeated the bad guys.
You can do the same. Because nobody dies if you fall short. Nobody loses a limb if you don’t succeed right away.
Best of all- you can always go back to the wizard and ask for more courage.
Now, I want you to take the John McClane challenge. You have one week from today to do the following:
- Get more Brains- Go learn something new that will help propel you towards starting or improving your small business.
- Get some Heart- Do at least one thing that will help somebody else without requiring them to reciprocate right away. Be genuine in your desire to fulfill another’s needs.
- Get some Courage- Step out and do something that you’re not comfortable doing. For me, it would be reaching out to someone I want to be a guest on the podcast. It makes me feel uncomfortable, but I’m always glad I did when they’re Crushing It on the other end of a Skype call with me!
